Semi-Direct Air Intake System
A specially designed cowl and semi-direct air intake system were designed to provide cooler air to the tuned long-track intake manifold while a four valve per cylinder DOHC powerhead with Variable Valve Timing lets the engine breathe more efficiently increasing acceleration and top end speed. Added to that are a fuel injection system and Suzuki's Lean Burn Technology for improved fuel economy.
Diagram of Semi-Direct Air Intake System
Big Block—High Performance Engine
With the DF200A, our goal was to build an outboard that provides all of the power and performance of a 147kW (200PS) class V6 outboard using a lighter, more compact four-cylinder configuration. To deliver that level of performance our engineers used an inline four-cylinder engine with a 2.9-liter "Big-Block" displacement and a higher 10.2:1 compression ratio to generate impressive acceleration and low-end torque.
Advanced Technology for Performance
Semi-Direct Air Intake System
The cover on the new DF200A has a modern upswept design giving it an innovative look. Underneath the looks though, the design is all about function. Incorporated into the cowl is a semi-direct air intake system that delivers cooler air directly to the engine's tuned multi-stage induction module. Engines breathing cooler air are able to increase operating efficiency resulting in greater acceleration and top-end speed.
The cover's design also helps reducing the temperature inside of the engine with ports that allow the rotating flywheel to push warm air inside of the cover to the outside.
Resonator
The engine's exhaust system is a well-known source of engine noise, but another, often overlooked source is the intake manifold. Air being sucked into the intake manifold at high velocities can generate a harsh sound.
The DF200A incorporates an air intake resonator that reduces such noise keeping operation exceptionally quiet.
Suzuki Lean Burn Control System
The Suzuki Lean Burn Control System is an intelligent fuel delivery system that achieves remarkable improvements in fuel consumption making fuel-efficient four-stroke outboards even more economical. Monitoring engine performance and operating conditions in real time, the system uses the 32-bit onboard ECM to predict fuel needs and deliver a leaner, more precise fuel mixture across the outboard's operating range. The results show significant improvements in fuel economy across the entire powerband, including the cruising range where the engine is used a majority of the time. Comparing the new DF200A with the original V6 DF200, tests show up to a 19% increase in fuel efficiency mainly in the cruising range (around 70% of its maximum speed).
LEAN BURN
Data used in the graphs were obtained through "In-House Suzuki Testing" under uniformed conditions. Results will vary depending upon operating conditions (boat design, size, weight, weather, etc.)
O2 Sensor Feedback Control System
Like many of Suzuki's high-end outboards, the DF200A features an O2 Sensor Feedback Control system that helps maintain optimum engine efficiency. The system monitors engine operating conditions to provide input to the ECM allowing it to manage the fuel/air mixture for maximum performance across the engine's full operating range.
Big Block—High Performance Engine
The design goal for the new DF200A was to provide boaters with the performance of a V6 DF200 outboard from a more compact, lighter weight four-cylinder engine. For this, Suzuki engineers started with the 2.9-liter straightfour block used on DF150/175, updating the "Big Block" design with a DOHC four-valve per cylinder powerhead and a 10.2:1 compression ratio. In addition, the engine incorporates Variable Valve Timing, Multi-stage Induction, and a 32-bit onboard computer. The end result is an engine that weighs 30kg less than the its V6 version making it an excellent choice for powering bass boats and other lightweight vessels. It's also an excellent choice for those wanting to upgrade older boats fitted with V6 two-strokes.
Multi-Stage Induction (MSI)
Getting the right amount of air into the cylinder has a great impact on performance. High-speed operation typically requires a greater volume of air, low-speed less. Suzuki's Multi-Stage Induction system meets these needs by utilizing two intake manifold pipes per cylinder to ensure the engine gets the right amount of air. At low rpm, air enters the combustion chamber through a longer, curved manifold pipe designed to improve combustion and improve low-end torque. As rpm increases, the valves open on the direct intake pipes. Shorter and lacking resistance, these pipes allow a greater volume of air into the chamber, increasing the engine's ability to breathe efficiently at high rpm resulting in higher power output during high-speed operation.
Higher Compression Ratio 10.2:1
Drawing upon our experience building race engines for motorsports, Suzuki engineers have designed the DF200A's in-line four-cylinder engine with a higher compression ratio of 10.2:1. The higher compression ratio delivers a noticeable improvement in performance and power output from the engine's 2,867cm3 displacement.
Largest Displacement In Its Class
Displacement has a direct effect on acceleration and torque. Generally speaking, the more the higher. For that reason, the DF200A is designed with a 2,867cm3 displacement making it the largest available in the 147kW (200PS) four-cylinder four-stroke class.
VVT (Variable Valve Timing)
Variable Valve Timing is utilized on many of Suzuki's highend outboards to deliver high performance across the outboard's full powerband while retaining the benefits that four-stroke technology provides. The system starts with an innovative cam profile designed for delivering maximum output and performance at high rpm. Variable Valve Timing is used to vary intake timing with the camshaft to optimize timing for low to mid-range operation. This allows the engine to deliver maximum power output across its entire operating range producing greater low to mid-range torque for powerful acceleration. The entire process happens automatically leaving you to enjoy the power and performance.
Smooth Operation
Counter Balancer System
One of the inherent characteristics common to in-line four cylinder engines when operating at high rpm is a secondary vibration that is directionally in line with the piston's movements. To neutralize this vibration, Suzuki engineers utilize a secondary balancer system that counters the piston's movement with a horizontal motion. To achieve this, the balancer is divided into left and right sections each rotating in an opposite direction at twice the speed of the crankshaft, effectively countering the secondary vibrations and producing smoother engine operation.
Quiet Operation
Suzuki four-stroke outboards have long been noted for their exceptionally quiet operation. Suzuki engineers go to great lengths incorporating methods designed to keep outboard operation as quiet as possible. In a noise comparison test between the DF200A and a competing 147kW (200PS) in-line four-stroke outboard, the results clearly show that the DF200A runs quieter than its competitor.
Thrust Mount System
The new DF200A incorporates a combination of soft type and high thrust rubber mounts on both the upper and lower mounts to reduce engine vibration and provide stable operation. Soft type rubber mounts are used to absorb vibrations generated in the idling through 2,000 rpm range while high thrust rubber mounts deliver stable operation under high loads increasing power and performance.
Offset Drive Shaft
Pioneered by Suzuki, the use of the offset drive shaft on four-stroke outboards has long been utilized to reduce the size of the outboard. Found on all Suzuki four-strokes from the DF70A and up, this design positions the crankshaft in front of the drive shaft simultaneously moving the outboard's center of gravity forward. While the design contributes greatly to the outboard's overall compactness and increased power performance, it also moves the engine's axis of inertia, the point where engine vibrations are at a minimum, up over the upper engine mount, thus greatly reducing vibration. These outboards also incorporate two-stage gear reduction designed to take maximum advantage of the power produced by these high performance engines. Providing a final drive ratio of 2.50:1—the largest you can find in either of these outboard classes—it delivers powerful torque for quick acceleration and great top-end speed.
Advanced Electronics
32-Bit ECM (Engine Control Module)
The DF200A is equipped with a 32-bit ECM (Engine Control Module) that provides precision control over motor operation, particularly the ignition and fuel delivery systems. This powerful onboard computer monitors and processes key data gathered in real-time from a series of sensors placed in areas crucial to engine operation. Those sensors include the Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor, Crankshaft Position Sensor, Intake Air Temperature Sensor, Shift Position Sensor, Throttle Position Sensor, Cylinder Wall Temperature Sensor, Camshaft Position Sensor, and Exhaust Manifold Temperature Sensor. Using these data the computer delivers precision control of the engine's ignition and fuel systems maintaining an optimal spark and fuel supply under all operating conditions.
High Output Alternators
These days boats are equipped with a wide array of electronics that demand an ample flow of power to keep them running. On the other hand, the DF200A is equipped with an alternator engineered to produce a majority of its maximum output of 44A (12V) with the motor running at a low 1,000rpm—ample for most circumstances.
Multi-Point Sequential Electronic Fuel Injection
Suzuki pioneered the use of electronic fuel injection in four-stroke outboards with the launch of its original DF70/60 in 1997. Suzuki's Multi-Point Sequential Electronic Fuel Injection supplies each of the engine's cylinders with an optimized mixture of fuel and air that is injected into the cylinder at high pressure according to commands from the ECM's 32-bit computer. The system delivers improved fuel economy, crisp acceleration and reduced emissions that meet emissions regulations. It also conforms to the Recreational Craft Directive (RCD) Standards, Directive 2003/44EC of the European Parliament and of the Council, and has received a three-star rating from the California Air Resource Board (CARB).
Designed with Convenience in Mind
Water-cooled Voltage Regulator with Isolator
Water-cooled voltage regulators incorporated on both outboards dissipate heat in the regulator to enhance durability. The battery charging system also incorporates an isolator function that allows the use of two batteries.
The system splits electric current into two circuits and is designed to safeguard the main battery in the event that the sub battery becomes drained.
Fuse Box
Fuses for the outboard's electrical system are housed in a single fuse box located on the side of the outboard motor. This design keeps the outboard's exterior clean while providing convenient access.
Tilt Limit System
To protect the boat and motor from damage that can occur when tilting the motor, both outboards incorporate a user adjustable tilt limit switch that prevents the outboard from tilting beyond a predetermined point.
Dual Engine Flush Ports
Over time, salt, sand, and dirt buildup can restrict flow in the cooling system causing damage. To help prevent such buildup, both outboards are equipped with two freshwater flush ports that make flushing the cooling system as easy as possible. With one port located on the port side of the down housing and a second on the front panel, you'll always have easy access to the flushing system whether the boat is in or out of the water.
Knock Sensor
Found on DF140A and DF115A, the knock sensor monitors combustion to provide the ECM with information needed for precise management of engine timing for optimum performance. In addition to maximizing power output, the system also helps increase engine durability.
Suzuki Water Detecting System
Water in the fuel can lead to problems that include poor combustion, lower power output, and corrosion.
The Suzuki Water Detecting System is designed to help protect the engine from moisture in the fuel utilizing a water detecting fuel filter to alert the operator with both visual and audio warnings when water is present in the fuel. The filter is also designed to let you check for water visually.
Durability and Reliability
Suzuki's Anti-Corrosion Finish
To guard against corrosion, Suzuki protects its outboards with its own specially formulated Suzuki Anti-Corrosion Finish. Applied directly to the outboard's aluminum alloy, this finish provides maximum bonding of the finish to the aluminum surface. Layering an epoxy primer undercoat, black metallic finish, and clear acrylic fiber finish on top of this forms an effective treatment against corrosion, protecting those parts of the outboard's aluminum alloy that are constantly exposed to saltwater.

Proven Technology
By using our advanced technologies these V6 outboards deliver superior performance. They have dual overhead cam (DOHC) powerheads with four valves per cylinder and multi-point sequential electronic fuel injection. The 55° V-block design and offset driveshafts contribute to making them remarkably compact. The DF300AP, DF250AP and DF250 deliver high performance with our Variable Valve Timing (VVT), by maximising torque in the low/mid-range. The DF250 and DF225 use a multi stage induction system, which maximizes airflow efficiency for ultimate top-end performance.
New Suzuki Selective Rotation
In addition to our drive-by-wire system (Suzuki Precision Control) and the Lean Burn Control System, the DF300AP and DF250AP feature Suzuki's Selective Rotation.
In its standard form, the outboard will operate in regular clockwise rotation, using the forward gear. Now, by changing the gear-shift mode and adding a counter rotational propeller, the same outboard can operate in counter rotation mode (anti-clockwise).
In counter rotation mode the power is transmitted through the reverse gear, which has been changed to give it the same characteristics as the forward gears. This is a world first in outboard motor technology.
When Only the Best is Good Enough
Our flagship V6 range provides the perfect power for both leisure and commercial craft. Suzuki served as the sole supplier of outboard motors to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games Sailing Regatta in which the DF300AP and DF200 along with the DF140, DF90A, and DF40A were used.
Suzuki Receives Seventh NMMA Innovation Award

The World’s First Selective Rotation Outboards
Award Winning Design Integrates both Regular and Counter-Rotation Operation into a Single Unit.
New Lower Unit
Compared to the original DF300, the biggest changes you'll find on these outboards are in the lower unit, which was redesigned for the Suzuki Selective Rotation system—the world's first integration of regular and counter-rotation models into a single unit. The system consists of a new drive gear layout in the lower unit that allows the outboard to operate in either regular or counter-rotation mode, and a switch that connects to a circuit in the engine compartment that engages the counter-rotation mode.
Like the DF300, the DF300AP/250AP utilizes an aggressive final drive ratio of 2.08:1 allowing it to turn a 406mm (16-inch) diameter propeller available in various pitch size for optimum performance on a wide variety of boats. Changes to gear designs provide greater durability, and adding a two-way water inlet changes water flow into the cooling system for increased cooling efficiency.
In multi-outboard installations on large boats, a counter-rotation outboard is usually paired with a regular rotation model to help keep the boat traveling on an even keel and in a straight line. The DF300AP/250AP is built with special counter rotating gearing in the lower unit, which causes the prop to rotate in the opposite direction. Suzuki Selective Rotation eliminates the need to purchase a dedicated counter-rotation outboard by using a special switch that when connected to a circuit inside of the engine compartment, turns a regular rotation outboard into a counter-rotation model with a counter rotational propeller.* This industry first is made possible through a special, unified design of gears, shaft, and bearings in the lower unit that are designed to operate reliably and efficiently in either regular or counter-rotation directions.
Two-way Water Inlet
The engine's cooling system relies on water supplied through low water intakes located on the lower unit. Utilizing this dual low water inlet configuration increases water flow into the lower unit, which delivers greater cooling efficiency. Positioning the forward inlet at the gear case nose delivers a greater water supply especially at high speeds. The second inlet is also positioned lower allowing the DF300AP/250AP to operate in shallow water conditions.
Superior Durability
With the addition of Suzuki Selective Rotation, gears in the lower unit were redesigned using a different alloy and slightly larger diameters delivering greater rigidity. The gears are specially heat treated creating gears that are highly durable.
Picture of Superior Durability
Newly Designed Low DragGear Case
The DF300AP/250AP features a redesigned low drag gear case developed to accommodate the new gears utilized in the Suzuki Selective Rotation system.
The case itself is actually larger than the previous model to provide increased gear durability, however it is designed with a smoother, more hydrodynamic shape that allows it to move through the water with less drag and greater efficiency. Areas with the highest drag are indicated in red in the illustrations below. The comparison shows that the new design allows the lower unit to slice through the water with less drag.
Large Air Intake with Water Separator
The DF300AP/250AP is designed with a large air induction port to maximize airflow into the engine in order to obtain maximum power output. The increased airflow produces more low- to mid-range torque and provides a wide power band that is necessary in an outboard engine. Suzuki also designed the system with a water separator, which aids in keeping water out of the electronic throttle body and a heat shield to keep intake air from being heated by the engine.
Suzuki's Lean Burn Control System
Suzuki's innovative Lean Burn Control System was first introduced on the DF90A/80A/70A to great acclaim from boaters and the media alike. It predicts fuel needs according to operating conditions allowing the engine to run on a more efficient fuel mixture through the use of a lean air-fuel ratio. It delivers its benefits over a wide operating range, providing significant improvements in fuel economy from low-speed operation into the cruising range. Combining this system with the Suzuki Precision Control electronic throttle and shift system allows the operator precise control over engine RPM for improved fuel economy over a wider operating range. This combination also delivers smooth power transitions throughout the entire RPM range. In-house testing shows that while cruising, the DF300AP is 14% more economical than the original non-Lean Burn DF300 without sacrificing any power of the original DF300.
Data used in the graphs were obtained through in-house testing under uniformed conditions. Results will vary depending upon operating conditions (boat design, size, weight, weather, etc.)
Cleaner, More Efficient Operation
Suzuki's advanced four-stroke technology delivers cleaner and more efficient operation that conforms to the Recreational Craft Directive (RCD) – Directive 2003/44EC of the European Parliament and of the Council, and has received three-star ratings from the California Air Resources Board (CARB).
EURO 1 Emissions Standards(Directive 2003/44EC)Label / CARB Three-Star Label
Suzuki Precision Control (Electronic Throttle and Shift Systems)
Suzuki Precision Control is a technologically advanced computer-based control system that replaces the mechanical control cables found in conventional control systems with electronic wiring that eliminates the source of friction and resistance. While you enjoy smooth throttle and shift operation with minimal friction, the system's computer is processing and transmitting commands in real-time to actuators at the engine that deliver precise throttle control with smoother, decisive shifting. This is most evident in the low rpm range where operation is noticeably smooth and accurate. When combined with Suzuki's Lean Burn Control System it allows control of fuel and air flow to boost the limit of the controllable revolution range improving fuel economy over a wide operating range. Suzuki Precision Control also features built-in systems that help guard the engine and drive against damage due to mishandling, and its design and simple wiring make installation easy, reducing the time required for rigging and adjustment. The system offers precision control for single, twin or triple installation as well as dual station operation.
Suzuki's Advanced Technology Delivers the Utmost in Performance VVT (Variable Valve Timing)
Suzuki's engineers designed the 4.0-liter V6 engine with an aggressive cam profile that delivers maximum output and performance at high rpm. In coupling this cam profile with Suzuki's advanced Variable Valve Timing (VVT), the DF300AP/250AP delivers the additional torque that outboards need for accelerating in the low to mid-range. VVT achieves this by adjusting the timing of the intake valves, allowing them to open before the exhaust valves are fully closed, creating a momentary overlap in the timing where both sets of valves are open. Using VVT, this overlap can be increased or decreased by altering intake timing with the camshaft resulting in optimum timing for low and mid-range operation.
Spherical Bore Throttle Body
An 81mm spherical bore throttle body smoothes the turbulent airflow into the engine that occurs as the throttle begins to open. Providing a smoother airflow during acceleration results in increased throttle control and stable engine operation at low rpm.
O2 Sensor Feedback Control System
Both the DF300AP and DF250AP are equipped with an O2 Sensor Feedback Control system that enables emissions to be cleaner and more stable. The system controls the air to fuel ratio across each of the engine's operating ranges providing an optimum amount of fuel to the engine regardless of rpm.
Fuel Cooler
The cooler the fuel the denser it is, and the denser it is the better performance it delivers. Incorporating a fuel cooler in the DF300AP/250AP's fuel delivery system cools the fuel before it enters the engine. Providing the engine with an optimum fuel supply results in better combustion and more performance.
Long Track Intake Manifold
Another performance enhancing feature on the DF300AP/250AP is a tuned long track intake manifold. Using long intake pipes tuned to provide smooth airflow into the engine the system provides the DF300AP/250AP with enhanced low-end power.
Suzuki Water Detecting System
Water in the fuel can be the source of poor combustion, lower power output, and corrosion. To help protect the engine from moisture in the fuel, the DF300AP/250AP is the first Suzuki outboard to utilize a water detecting fuel filter that alerts the operator with both visual and audio warnings when water is present in the fuel.

AT POWER WITH PASSION
We are proud to introduce our DF325A – an outboard that perfectly balances awesome power and thrust, with outstanding fuel-efficiency and trusted reliability all within a lightweight and stylish design.
Built with the every-day use of larger boats in mind, this market-leading outboard has been engineered to run on 91 RON fuel and, as a world-first, is the first four stroke outboard over 300 horsepower to do so.
The high-tech and innovative DF325A has been designed to be robust, easy to use and versatile, making it the ideal outboard for large boats whatever the task.
Whether you are using your boat for work or play, wherever you are in the world, this outboard is the ultimate choice.
BETTER STEERING IN ALL DIRECTIONS
Normally, when using multiple outboards a combination of standard and counter-rotating engines is mounted. The Suzuki Selective Rotation, available on our AP series outboards, eliminates the need for different models, as any model can be easily programmed to run in either direction. The DF325A’s contra-rotating propeller technology takes this process one step further by eliminating steering torque and maximizing true and straight propulsion forces.
DESIGNING STRONGER REVERSE THRUST
The gear material was changed and heat treatment was added to endure the added thrust and inertial mass from the reverse thrust, which was stronger on a contra-rotating propeller. In addition, the reverse gear was moved above the cavitation plate and the position of the lower engine mounts was modified from parallel to V-shape to fit the reverse gear above the cavitation plate.
DUAL WATER INTAKES
On the DF325A, the best results were achieved when the main intake was positioned at the front of the gear case, with the secondary intake located just above the skeg. This was our ultimate solution to arranging the main and sub intakes as far apart from each other as possible, and designing them to ensure a reliable amount of cooling water, especially at high speeds.
PROPELLER BLADE DESIGN
A three-blade front/three-blade back propeller set-up was developed that provided improved performance on the water. This new set up provided not only the highest recorded speeds for the DF325A, but also delivered incredible acceleration, even under heavy load and at high rotation speeds.
CONTRA-ROTATING PROPELLER
The contra-rotating propeller provides more “grip” underwater, and because contra-rotating props distribute the engine torque evenly over two propellers, the torque per propeller decreases and gear diameter can be reduced. This makes a reduction in gear diameter possible, which could then lead to the design of a smaller, more hydrodynamic gear case.
DUAL INJECTORS
Injecting fuel does two things, it atomizes the fuel and, incidentally, it cools the cylinder to minimize knock. To achieve the power we wanted, we needed to inject 100% of the fuel into the cylinder all at once, at a precise time, and at a precise angle to both cool the cylinder and to allow combustion to take place in the center of the combustion chamber.
The Dual Injector System using two smaller injectors provided the required precision as well as improved atomization, increasing output by 3% without causing knocking.
DIRECT INTAKE SYSTEM AND DUAL LOUVER SYSTEM
At high speed, water particles could be directed, trapped, and drained away.
Our experienced engineers worked on applying this theory to practice by increasing the intake flow to convert water vapor to particles and designing blades to capture and deflect those particles away from the intake flow. The Dual Louver System incorporates a double shield of blades, each one designed in a dog-leg shape. The outer row of blades removes the spray from the boat and the inner louvers capture and drain the remaining mist.
As a result, intake air temperature is free of moist and no higher than 10° above ambient.
